About me
Sally Jean Fox is a writer, artist, and coach, and the author of Meeting the Muse After Midlife, a memoir about finding hope and meaning after 50 through creative expression.
She works with those eager to expand their creativity, embrace their Muse, and live more artful, meaningful lives.
In her weekly Substack newsletter, Embracing the Muse, Sally explores how we can create, thrive, and stay connected to our deepest selves—especially in challenging times.
She holds an MBA from Yale and a PhD from Fielding Graduate University. Over the years, she has taught graduate-level leadership development and helped hundreds of clients find their authentic voices, tell their stories, and design lives that reflect who they truly are.
Sally lives with her husband, her horse, and two irrepressible springer spaniels on an island near Seattle.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I love expressing myself creatively through writing, art, gardening, and occasional singing. I love to inspire people and clients to trust their inner wisdom and find and follow their creative paths.
What changed for you after age 50?
I became more of who I always was; I set out on a journey of creative expression and never stopped; I shifted my practice from general leadership coaching to focusing on storytelling and expanding one’s creative path; I wrote a book; I started a radio show; I joined Boards of spiritual educational organiztaions I value; I adopted 2 wonderful dogs.
What would you tell the 20 or 30-year-old YOU?
Trust that if you feel you are different – it’s OK – your differences are part of your gift – plus everyone somewhere in there doesn’t feel like they fit in. And treasure the fact that you are a sensitive, intuitive and artistic and not everyone will get that – especially in business.
What do you think you’ll tell yourself in retrospect at the end of your life?
You did what you came here for—the best as you could—and you loved deeply.
What impact do you think increased visibility can have on your business?
Open the door to more people – especially mature adults — who want to design and live more creative lives. Broaden the reach of my book and blog.
Who or what inspires you and why?
Pope Francis — humility, depth, and connection to God — a man who lived not out of ego but of service to the world; a man who cared deeply about the marginalized and state of the planet (I’m not Catholic, either)
Something else I’d like to share
I believe that we all can have access to the Muse or deepen our connection to our inner wisdom as we age.
